Juan Manuel Benítez
Colombian Pride — A Living Proof That Dreams Do Come True
We first saw him in action during a recent Major League Pickleball tournament. Amid the intensity of the matches and the dreams of the pros pushing every rally, Juan Manuel Benítez stood out—not only as a talented player, but as a magnetic presence representing the growing force of Latin American talent in pickleball.
His energy on the court was undeniable, but what truly captured our attention was the story behind the racquet.
Born in Medellín, Colombia, Benítez grew up playing tennis, where he developed discipline, focus, and a relentless competitive spirit from an early age. Like many athletes in Latin America, the road was not always easy. Opportunities were limited, and pursuing a professional path required determination, sacrifice, and belief.
Eventually, that determination brought him to the United States, where his journey took a new direction with the discovery of pickleball—a sport that would open doors to new opportunities and a growing professional circuit.
Today, Juan Manuel Benítez competes at a high level and is part of the California Black Bears roster in Major League Pickleball, representing not only his team but also a generation of Latin American athletes entering the global pickleball stage.
But perhaps the most powerful part of his story isn’t found in rankings or results—it’s the message he carries.
For Benítez, the journey has always been about commitment.
As he says himself:
“I’m not good at doing things halfway, so when I got into pickleball, I went all out.”
His story reminds us that success rarely follows a straight path. It is built through discipline, perseverance, and the courage to pursue opportunities beyond borders.

Interview
DA: Tell us about your beginnings in tennis. What did that sport mean to you?
JB: I started playing tennis at a very young age in Medellín, Colombia. My family introduced me to sports early, and tennis quickly became a big part of my life. It shaped me not only as an athlete but also as a person. Through tennis I learned discipline, consistency, and how to compete. It laid the foundation for everything I do today in pickleball.
DA: Juan Manuel is currently part of the California Black Bears in the MLP. What does it mean to compete at that level?
JB: It means a lot. Playing in Major League Pickleball is an incredible opportunity. The level of competition is very high, and being part of a team like the California Black Bears pushes me to improve every day. It’s exciting to represent my team and also represent Colombia on that stage.
DA: What role has your family played in your athletic career?
JB: My family has been extremely important throughout my journey. They supported me from the beginning when I was training and traveling for tennis tournaments. Their belief in me helped me continue during difficult moments. They always reminded me to stay humble and keep working.
DA: Is there anyone in particular who has been key in your journey?
JB: Yes, I’ve had several coaches and mentors who have helped me along the way. Each one contributed something different to my development—technical knowledge, mental strength, or simply motivation. Their guidance has helped me grow both as a player and as a person.
DA: Why did you decide to move to the United States?
JB: Moving to the U.S. was a big step. After finishing my studies, I realized that if I wanted to pursue sports at a higher level, I needed to be in an environment where there were more opportunities to compete. The pickleball scene in the United States is growing incredibly fast, and being here allows me to keep developing my game.
DA: How did you discover pickleball?
JB: I first heard about pickleball around 2015 through friends in California. At that time, I didn’t know much about the sport. But once I played it for the first time, I felt something special. The strategy, the speed of the game, and the competitiveness really attracted me. I kept playing more and more until I realized I wanted to pursue it seriously.
DA: What do you think is needed for pickleball to grow even more?
JB: I think investment in youth development and coaching is very important. If we build strong programs for younger players and continue expanding infrastructure, the sport will grow even faster. Also, international expansion will be key so players from more countries can compete and develop.
DA: What’s a typical day like for you?
JB: I usually wake up early, have breakfast, and start training. My days are centered around pickleball—training sessions, coaching, and preparing for tournaments. When I’m not on the court, I’m thinking about strategy, reviewing matches, and looking for ways to improve my game.
DA: Do you focus more on physical or mental training?
JB: Both are very important. Physically, you need speed, endurance, and quick reactions. But mentally, you also need to stay focused, handle pressure, and make the right decisions during matches. The balance between both is what makes a complete player.
DA: Do you have hobbies outside the court?
JB: When I have time, I enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family. I also like discovering new places and cultures. Those experiences help keep a balance between competition and life outside the sport.
DA: What message would you give to young athletes who dream of playing professionally?
JB: Believe in your dreams and stay consistent. Success takes time, discipline, and perseverance. If you truly believe in what you are doing and continue working hard, opportunities will come.
