This June 11, the sports world gets a historic doubleheader: Estadio Azteca opens the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a lineup of global superstars, while Major League Pickleball unleashes its fourth stop of the season in Austin — with the queen of the sport on court, a sibling showdown, and the most explosive trade of the year.
There are good days to be a sports fan. And then there's this Thursday.
The Global Party Kicks Off at the Azteca
Mexico vs South Africa opens the biggest World Cup in history: 48 national teams, 104 matches, and 16 host cities across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The legendary Azteca makes history as the only stadium on the planet to open three World Cups — 1970, 1986, and now 2026.
And before the ball rolls, the show: the opening ceremony brings Maná, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, and Los Ángeles Azules to the Azteca turf, alongside international firepower from J Balvin, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, and Tyla. The ceremony starts around 1:30 PM (ET); kickoff is at 3:00 PM (ET).
Our Battle Erupts in Austin
That same Thursday, at Austin Pickle Ranch — the birthplace of the league — eleven teams open four days of fire at the first outdoor stop of the season, where Texas heat and humidity promise to test even the smoothest hands in the game.
Group A brings together the California Black Bears, Carolina Hogs, Columbus Sliders, Miami Pickleball Club, and SoCal Hard Eights. Group B is a war zone: Atlanta Bouncers, Bay Area Breakers, Dallas Flash, Florida Smash, New Jersey 5s, and the hometown Texas Ranchers.
The Storylines You Can't Miss
The queen arrives in Texas. Anna Leigh Waters, the undisputed number one in world pickleball, lands in Austin with the New Jersey 5s and her new partner Jorja Johnson — the most feared women's duo in the league, arriving red-hot after taking the crown in Columbus.
Siblings at war. For the first time in years, Jorja and JW Johnson are playing apart — and fate dropped them into the same group. JW leads Mark Cuban's Dallas Flash, and the sibling clash in group play is appointment viewing.
The trade that shook the league. The Texas Ranchers — the franchise backed by Scottie Scheffler, Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons, and Lil Wayne — pulled off the biggest move of the season, sending Dylan Frazier to Patrick Mahomes' Miami Pickleball Club in exchange for Nico Acevedo. Frazier arrives in Austin in new colors, and if Miami and Texas both advance, a Super Sunday reunion would be straight out of a movie.
The chase. The St. Louis Shock command the overall standings, and both the 5s and the Columbus Sliders of Andrei Daescu and Parris Todd arrive in Austin with one mission: win the event and crash the race for the top. Up to 25 standings points await Sunday's champion.
For Florida, two flags fly: the Miami Pickleball Club and the Florida Smash chase crucial points on the road toward the August Playoffs.
All the action streams on Pickleballtv and its app — and Super Sunday takes over national television with all-day coverage on MSG Network.
The big decision? There isn't one.
Pickleball with your morning coffee. Ceremony and the opening match in the afternoon. Back to Austin to close out the night.
Soccer brings the entire world to North America. Pickleball shows the world why this is also where the next great sports are born.
This Thursday isn't about choosing. It's about scheduling.
